Honestly, this episode was not bad. I think it helps that Spock has finally arrived so it's not just everyone talking about him all the time. The Talosians were kind of a weird thing to include because it's really not clear how they could possibly fit into the larger story, but they were fine. I'm also not sure where they're going with the Dr Boyfriend plot, but I guess we'll see.

Pike version one. |
We start with a recap of The Cage for those who aren't familiar with an unaired pilot from 1965, although I'm not sure how helpful it would actually be since they don't really go through the plot in depth. I guess it does let you know that this is all referencing some stuff from the original series.

Pike version two. Or four, actually, if you want to get technical. |
Anyway, Spock takes Michael to Talos IV (or she takes him there, whichever way you want to look at it) to get his brain fixed. And then there's a whole lot of flashbacks. We see Spock seeing the angel, we see Spock escaping from his doctors (but not killing them as he's accused of doing), we see a bunch of planets being destroyed - and that's the thing the angel is apparently here to prevent. We also see the shocking, terrible, unforgivable thing that Michael did to Spock that has resulted in them never talking for most of the lives - and it's just not that shocking or terrible. She said some mean stuff to him one time. I think most siblings have probably done worse.

It's the Talosians and their human. Like in The Cage. From 1965. Remember that? |
Back on the Discovery, Dr Boyfriend is all out of sorts. Stamets is trying to make him feel better but he's just constantly angry about everything. Then he sees Voqler (who is the guy who murdered him) and decides to go fight him. Saru allows this for some reason, and Pike's like "Uh, I get that this is an odd situation, but how about we don't let members of the crew fight each other from now on, OK?" Then Dr Boyfriend decides to be Dr Ex-Boyfriend but before Stamets can really react to that he gets called down to the mushroom room.
|
I'm not sure either of them should actually be allowed on active duty anyway. |
The woman from Talos has contacted Pike and told him to come pick up Michael and Spock, and they're about to do that when they discover that the mushroom drive is broken, and it looks like Voqler did it. They all think he's done it for some Section 31 reason or maybe he was hypnotised or something, but we're reminded that the robot woman got hacked last episode, so it was probably her. But we don't know who hacked her or why, so that doesn't really shed any light on anything.
|
If anyone ever paid any attention to her at all they might notice the weird red dots in her eyes. |
So they have to use the regular warp drive to go to Talos and Section 31 follows them, bu then the Talosians use their mind powers to pull a fast one and get Spock and Michael back onto the Discovery. And Georgiou is like "I could have told you they'd do that. I killed the fuck out of those guys in my universe." and her boss is like "Wait, why do we have you working here again?" but I guess she's got some dirt on him so he just has to put up with her even though she's obviously and openly working against him.

I am Spock. See me do the Spock thing? |
