The last of last year's books

I wasn't reading as much and I forgot to keep posting reviews here, so here's a catch-up for the books I read last year, to be followed by a catch-up for the books I read this year, and then hyopefully more regular posts after that.

Medusa's Touch

Emily L. Byrne

A fairly light, easy read. The plot moves a a decent pace and there's only minimal made-up bullshit fantasy/sci-fi terminology for ordinary things. It's annoying, but not overly so.

Louise de La Vallière

Alexandre Dumas

When it's good, it's very good, but it is very slow and a lot of it is not very interesting. But it's much better than Ten Years Later and has more of D'Artagnan and a lot more of Porthos.

Slaves of the Mire

Martin Charbonneau

I think this book was solidly mediocre. It was fine, but nothing about it was particularly memorable. Morok Torg is played up as this major antagonist, but I just never cared about him at all. Similarly, neither of Autumn Snow's allies, Athania and Shanibelle, really get an opportunity to show much personality. They're mostly just there.

Anguished English

Richard Lederer

The first part, "Schoolishness", is very funny. Unfortunately the rest of the book isn't much good.

We'll Soldier No More

Michael Burt

Made me think that it would be quite good if Stephen Fry was playing Whyborn, but in writing it just wasn't doing anything for me.
