Marvel's Runaways - Metamorphosis

Once again, things keep happening, but none of them are the actual main plot. I mean, that's kind of moving forward, but not in any meaningful way. The kids are still collecting evidence and the parents are still at the "do the kids suspect something? Nah, probably not" stage. This episode is ostensibly centred around a heist, but it's actually kind of the B plot rather than the focus.

Also this old guy is maybe hundreds of years old?
Our flashback this time answers one question but not in a way that actually resolves any confusion; the formerly old man was, 15 years ago, not old. So he's definitely seen the cultist's mum before. And he definitely aged super-fast somehow. But does he get super old in the span of a single year? Has he just been hanging around in the secret room of the fake cult all this time? Why has the cultist's dad (who's not a member of the real cult) never seen him before? What's he been doing all this time?

The first sacrifice, 15 years ago.
But we see this time that most of the (real) cult didn't know what they were signing up for. They got some unspecified benefits ahead of time and then were basically tricked into taking part in the first sacrifice and wanted to back out, but they couldn't because the goth's mum was filming them and also they thought the formerly old guy might do something terrible to them.

Trust him, for all you know he may be a doctor.
We get some more character interactions: goth is getting along with her mum and learning to use the magic staff (which might actually be some kind of high-tech gadget; the cultist is gay and into the goth; the cultist's dad either knows or suspects that his wife is sleeping with the formerly old man; the jock's dad finds out that his wife is having an affair with goth's dad and subsequently causes a scene at the party so everyone knows that now; jock's dad's brain cancer comes out and the formerly old guy injects him with some sort of panacea (that I think is made from his own DNA) that seems to cure him; the cultist discovers that she can fly; jock kisses cultist and doesn't seem to realise that she's clearly not into him; and the little sister accidentally tells the blerd's mum that she saw the parents in their cult robes.

The effects here remind me of the dog from Inhumans.
And the actual heist goes off pretty much without a hitch. Nerd has to distract some guards and goth's mum almost catches her and blerd hacking some stuff in her office, but they get away with the videos of the real cult meetings. They're encrypted, but in this kind of show that just means it'll take some arbitrary amount of time for them to be able to watch them. Also goth seems to be a little bit suspicious of blerd now, and it seems like jock and goth are wavering in their dedication to take down the real cult.

This is going to require so much hacking.
So basically it's another episode that ends with things seeming like they're about to get moving, but I don't trust it any more. Every episode seems to promise that shit's about to get real and yet shit remains very much pretend. Remember how they discovered that nerd's parents had a dinosaur and it escaped? Remember how that went absolutely nowhere? It's really starting to feel like the writers don't want the story to actually progress.

No prize for spotting the Stan Lee cameo in this one.
