I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues

Elton John has no idea what words mean. I've listend to this song many times and I still have no idea why they call it the blues. Or what Mr John thinks "it" is that they call "the blues".

Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever

Wish what away? What are you talking about?

Between you and me
I could honestly say
That things can only get better

So, things are bad? But I shouldn't wish it (whatever "it" is) away?

And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside

I have no idea what that means.

And it won't be long
Before you and me run
To the place in our hearts
Where we hide

What? We hide inside our own hearts? Is this a metaphor for you coming back from wherever you're going? That makes no sense.

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

What is?

Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you

What does that have to do with calling "it" "the blues"?

Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

They call it "the blues" because you're laughing like children? That is not what "the blues" means.

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands

You mean your head in my hands, right, not just your face? That's a weird way to phrase it.

Live for each second
Without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man

Without me girl
Cry in the night if it helps

Helps what? And is crying at other times also acceptable?

But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

They call it the blues because you love me more than life itself? Again, that doesn't make sense. This has nothing to do with why "the blues" has the meaning that it does.

Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

Now you're just repeating yourself and it still doesn't make sense.

And I guess that's why
They call it the blues
Time on my hands
Could be time spent with you
Laughing like children
Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why
They call it the blues

Sure, OK, that's why they call it the blues. Why not.
