Star Trek's evil mirror universe is dumb in the best way. Everything about it is ridiculous and it shouldn't work, but it does. And of course that's where the crew of the Discovery find themselves in this episode. We don't get to see any evil versions of them, but the good versions do dress up as their evil counterparts and it's awesome. A bit too much gold on the captains' uniforms, but otherwise the evil uniforms are great.

They even repainted the ship's label. |
First we get to see Tilly as captain, because despite every person who exists in one universe existing in others, their lives are completely different. Like I said, this makes no sense. How do they have the same children if they live different lives? What about people who die in one universe but go on to have kids in the other? Do they balance out and just somehow have each other's kids? Why does no one in the show ever notice how little sense this makes?

All the gold reminds me of a costume from Xena or something. |
They find some information (handily just floating around in space) about another good-universe ship that came through to the mirror universe before and is still there, so they decide to try to get all the info they can on it to figure out how it came across without a spore drive. This involves Michael pretending that the captain is her prisoner - because she's a captain in this universe and he's a fugitive - so they can get onto Michael's old ship - which hasn't been destroyed in this universe - and access the Empire's (evil Federation) databases.

Why do the bad guys always get the cooler uniforms? |
Of course the evil Michael's second-in-command tries to kill her because that's how you get promoted in this universe (because it's really dumb) and she has to kill him, which is dramatic because he's one of the people she accidentally got killed back in episode two. Then she just has to deal with all her supposed underlings hanging around, trying to ingratiate themselves to her, so she doesn't actually get a chance to get the info she needs yet. Which means we're still in the mirror universe for at least one more episode!

Why are these ships so poorly lit? |
Oh, also the new security guy is brainwashed by the klingons or something and he killed the doctor, and the fungus guy is all messed up, babbling nonsense and flailing about and so forth. Basically it's a loud, violent coma. I don't really care about that right now though. I like fungus guy, but the other two... meh. And I'm sure fungus guy will be OK eventually. He's probably going to get blamed for the doctor's death though, which sucks for him. Also the captain's currently playing the part of prisoner, which in this universe means constant torture. So, sucks to be him as well.

RIP in peace, Doctor Boyfriend. |
Ever since the previous episode aired some were speculating that the rest of the season might be a complete paradigm shift, instead of the war it would be "how do we get home?" I don't think it'll be that dramatic - I'm expecting the mirror universe to take up one, maybe two more episodes - but I am hoping that when they get back the evil Discovery is still in the good universe and we get some fun with that. But you know, if the rest of the show is them trying to survive in the evil universe? I'd be on board for that.

That looks painful. |
