Star Trek: Discovery - What's Past Is Prologue

A pretty good episode. For this show, at least. It was all fairly predictable but only because it was the resolution to events that had already been set in motin, so there weren't supposed to be any surprises. A bit too much time spent on a big Arrow-style fight scene, but overall a good conclusion to the mirror universe stuff.

They were all conveniently kept close together.
As expected, Lorca freed his soldiers and used them to take over the ship, and picked up evil fungus-guy on the way. Apparently evil fungus-guy had previously been working for Lorca and developed a super-weapon, but betrayed him to gain favour with the emperor - classic evil universe stuff. It's really not important though, more just an excuse to include evil fungus-guy a bit longer.

The super weapon is some kind of toxic gas, I guess?
The emperor, of course, decides to go fight him personally, because that's the sort of dumb thing people do in shows like this; he wins and she runs away. But Michael finds her and they come up with a plan to stop him. Spoiler: The plan is to pretend to surrender and then just attack him. It's amazing how often that plan gets used in TV and movies.

Leading the troops personally looks cool, but it's a bad idea.
Michael also contacts the Discovery and lets them know what's going on so that they can swoop in at the last minute, rescue her, and blow up the emperor's space-castle - because its power source is apparently what's causing the fungus network to die. Oh, and if the fungus dies then everything dies in all universes.

Saru makes a speech.
Then, like I said at the start, there's a big fight scene where Michael and the emperor team up to kill a bunch of dudes and finally Lorca - Michael refuses to kill him so the emperor stabs him through the back with a sword and pushes him into the convenient trapdoor that leads to the space-castle's power source.

Why do they even have this trap-door?
Then there's a bit that didn't really make any sense, where Lorca's followers were still trying to kill her even though she'd won and she was like "I was defeated so now all I can hope for is to die in battle" like she's a Klingon or something, instead of just barricading herself in her throne room and calling in reinforcements to kill all the traitors. But Michael wasn't keen on that so she grabbed her as she was being transported out and brought her onto the Discovery.

She's not thrilled, honestly.
And all that was left then was for the Discovery to blow up the space-castle and ride the shockwave back to the normal universe, which fugnus-guy was able to do by thinking about Dr Boyfriend. But oh no, they're back nine months after they left and the Klingons have been wrecking everything! So it's back to boring Klingon war bullshit next episode, I guess. I was really hoping they'd find themselves in either the wrong time entirely or a different alternate universe, because I can't see the last two episodes being any good at all.

I guess this is what fungus-guy was seeing?
So there you go, a not bad episode and at least evil-Michelle Yeoh might be entertaining in some way. I think we've probably seen all that's worth seeing of this season now though and it'll just coast to the end on a wave of mediocrity.

One more picture of Yeoh looking cool, because why not?
